The summer her dad was shot,
Dani still wanted to be a giraffe
and regularly munched on playground leaves.
Black ants plagued the ladder to roof of their new  house
and it wasn’t until her ninth birthday
that Dani stopped tiptoeing and stretching.
It was that summer that she
taught me how to steal sweet
oranges from our neighbor's yard
and how to eat them without dripping.
